Columbine

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

I am still continuing to see the New Vampire who calls herself Columbine.

I admit that I am curious about her.  While she has adapted well to prison life, I am curious as to what will happen to her on her release.

She has talked about moving to another country, but has no money and no contacts in other countries.

New Vampires unfortunately pride themselves on living in squats, but would not stoop so low as to make themselves homeless.

She has talked about going back to her old squat, but they have the permanency of moths in a flame.

She has talked about killing someone for money to set up elsewhere, but since her attempts at picking pockets have seen her in her present predicament, I do not think she would be any more successful with murder.

Finding paid employment is unthinkable for New Vampires, who scrounge what they can and pose when they can’t.  They do a lot of posing.

Columbine was striking several poses as she tried to get a reaction out of me while discussing what she was going to do when she was released, so I doubt she is serious about any of them.

For her, it is a way of passing the time, of which there is always too much in prison; especially when there is a shortage of officers and prisoners have much more cell time.

I have made a small wager, which is hardly a bet, with Darren who is the New Vampire Representative, that she will be back in prison before the century is out.

I have not been so foolish as to wager my money this time; the stake is the loser takes on three tasks that do not break the law in any way and do not conflict with anything else the loser has been asked to do.  It is just a small bet.

Forming The Hunters

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

All non-human Representatives on The Committee are kept busy forming The Hunters.

The only exception is Darren, the New Vampire Representative, as The Hunters were originally only New Vampires.

It is easy to find Old Vampires who despise criminals and want to bring them in.  It is difficult to find those who will work with Werewolves and New Vampires.  I cannot blame them.

An Old Vampire will not take orders from a Werewolf or New Vampire; the same goes for the other two.

Thankfully The Ruler’s Men have given me several dossiers on Old Vampires that have proved useful in persuading them to become Hunters.

I have spoken to Terry, the butler at my club, who turned up with five Old Vampire servants who, for reasons best kept confidential, will become Hunters.

We Representatives have decided that The Hunters will be headed by the best of all three non-humans.

This means that one cannot take a decision without agreement from at least one of the others.

It is obvious to me that unfortunately Old Vampires will have to work with Werewolves or New Vampires from time to time; they will have to decide how best to work with other non-humans as I have had.

It has been decided that The Hunters will do no other job.  This means that there will often be times when there is nothing to do and they will be free to pursue their own interests.

Apparently, the New Vampires’ countenances brightened when they heard this.  The Old Vampires just nodded; every Old Vampire has times when there is nothing to do and they relax and pick up hobbies.

Who heads the Old Vampires will be decided by a Fence, usually only used for disputes.

New Department

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Ruler’s Men required that I call an emergency meeting of The Committee to discuss The Vampire Hunters.

This time I informed the participants of the agenda and asked Darren to bring his Vampire Hunters.

We walked in late and the Ruler’s Men did not introduce themselves.  They then said that I had done well under trying and unusual circumstances, but The Ruler had some stipulations to make.

The other Representatives tensed up at this.  The Ruler’s Men said that the Vampire Hunters would have been useful when we were catching the Old Vampire who had killed so many humans, but they would like to see them tempered with Old Vampires and Werewolves.

Darren said that he thought Old Vampires did not work with New Vampires and one of the Ruler’s Men looked at me and said that people could be found.  The Vampire Hunters looked at each other and confirmed they could work with Old Vampires and Werewolves.

Saskia, the Werewolf Representative, also said that she could find people who would work with vampires.

The upshot of this is that we now have a department called The Hunters who will find criminals and bring them to Andy, who is the Human Police Representative, to ensure they are guilty.

An Old Vampire will not work on finding an Old Vampire, the same with Werewolves and New Vampires.

Andy was a lot happier with this solution, as it means the Human Police now have a role in what happens.  He was less happy when we pointed out that his was only a watching brief and each non-human had a right to mete out justice according to their own kind’s rules.  For once, the rest of us agree fully with that.

Portsmouth

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

I have recently been asked why the offices of The Committee are in Portsmouth and not London.

This is because while London is the capital and anything can be found there, Portsmouth and Southampton have always been the ports of docking for people; more importantly the non-human people.

Old Vampires preferred Portsmouth as there was a good chance of being attacked by sailors, who make a good meal.

Werewolves preferred Southampton, but since New Vampires also preferred Portsmouth the offices of The Committee are there.

If there had even been a vague chance of Old and New Vampires co-operating the Werewolves would have raised more of an outcry at this.

It was only later on that the Human Police started showing an interest in non-humans, particularly vampires.   A compromise was brokered between us and as a result the Human Police joined The Committee.

From Portsmouth non-humans were either sent to Southampton or London as they had the best transport links.  In recent centuries it was not unknown to wander through a train and find a werewolf and New Vampire glowering at one another from different ends of the carriage in third class.

So Portsmouth became where non-humans were processed.  I suspect New Vampires did as they pleased; among Old Vampires it is expected that you will be a guest at your host’s expense.  Your host is usually an ally of yours; if not then it is an opportunity to cultivate a new ally.

We Old Vampires have always had someone to welcome us into Britain as the new arrival may be fleeing from a mob, have little in the way of possessions with them and need time to obtain access to important bank accounts.

Caught

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Andy, who is the Human Police Representative and Darren, who is the new New Vampire representative have caught the human behind the contaminated blood supplies.

Unfortunately, I had not been able to help since Darren had made it clear it was New Vampire business and Michelle, the Old Vampire who supplied the blood, had been exonerated.

I have not visited Columbine, the New Vampire whose blood supply was contaminated as this would only confuse matters; I contented myself by sending her a get-well card.

The perpetrator was a human prisoner who thought Columbine was getting preferential treatment.

In a way, she does. The cell she is in needs to be strong enough to keep any vampire caged and vampires, Old or New, are not permitted to mix with humans so have extra visitors. Otherwise she is treated like any other prisoner.

Andy is annoyed that the perpetrator has disappeared and it irks me that I have to agree with the New Vampires but there really is no other way to deal with the situation.

The perpetrator was on Basic, which meant that everything that could be taken away from her had already been done so.

She is on an ISPP sentence, which means that she stays a prisoner until the parole board determine that she is no longer a risk to society.

I asked him how someone on Basic could have contaminated blood supplies; he looked sour and said that Security was “looking into it”.

All that means is that the personnel currently in Security will be shuffled around the prison and a new set of people will be in Security. It does not mean that security will get better.

Resources are tight and Michelle informs me that the staff are stretched to breaking point. Thankfully this is not something I have to deal with.

Replacement

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Nosferatu has been replaced.  We have not been informed why, but my conjecture is that Columbine’s contaminated blood proved that he was not serving his people.

The first I knew was when Jane brought his replacement’s card in to my home.  This was the first time a New Vampire had come to my home, but since he was observing our social etiquette I could not refuse him.

Jane showed what appeared to be a bowler-hatted businessman into the room and left to arrange drinks.  No doubt she had made enquiries as to his preferences when showing him in.

After some small talk, I congratulated him on his new post, which opened the way for the business which brought him here.

It seems he wanted to “come to an understanding” about Columbine and find out what my interest in her was.

I freely admitted my fall from grace since this New Vampire is obviously no fool (unlike his predecessor) and would be wondering why I have no castle unlike my peers.

I then informed him that I was hoping Columbine would share some information that may have currency, or more likely, someone would have need of knowledge about New Vampires in the future.

He gave a small nod and informed me that while Columbine was free to have any visitors she chose, New Vampires would be taking back the delivery of blood to the New Vampires in the prison.

He passed the details of his associate who would be working there to me.  I have already met with Michelle and appraised her of the situation.  He also informed me that the perpetrator was theirs to deal with, as any perpetrator who contaminated Old Vampire blood supplies would be ours.

After that, he made his goodbyes and left.  I will carry on visiting Columbine as long as she will see me.

Aftermath

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Affairs are still settling down after the news of my divorce got out.  I am still an object of whispers and to some I am known as “that woman” while I hear that my Judge has not had to pay for his food since.

There are two divorces which have now been brought before Judges, but I hear those are more difficult cases as both parties are still living with one another.

I suspect our Ruler is letting the Judges make the law on divorce, as this is a matter between one subject and another; it will not affect the tax he collects.

Andy, the Human Police Representative on The Committee, congratulated me on my divorce at a Committee meeting.

Privately he has said that he thought Jeremy was “a piece of work”.  I have had to do a lot of research to find out what he meant.

The others at The Committee received the news with different feelings.  Saskia who is the Werewolf Representative is firmly against it, while Nosferatu who is the New Vampire Representative mentioned that New Vampires do not get married.

I retorted with the fact that New Vampires do not do much of anything and asked if he’d been to see Columbine lately, who is a New Vampire in the prison.  He changed the subject.

My servant Jane is starting to return from her nights off in more of her usual neat state, rather than looking worse for wear.

My desk is filled with letters about my divorce.  Some congratulatory and some filled with hatred and bile.  These last are anonymous and I have consigned them to the wastepaper bin.

Then there are others criticising and questioning what I did.  I have formulated a stock letter to reply to these as while I must reply to every letter I would not be paid for these.

Reduction in Posting

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

It has been noted that the posts of this blog have decreased to bi-weekly and readers have been asking why.

I would prefer to write a weekly post, but the increased influx of requests coming into my office to be dealt with, plus Old Vampires now expect their requests to be dealt with more promptly now the telephone is commonplace in our lives, means that my workload is greater.

Sometimes I get requests from New Vampires. These requests are generated because they are not getting satisfaction from their representative. It expands my sphere of influence to answer them as best as I can.

If an Old Vampire was not getting satisfaction from one of my answers (this does happen from time to time) they would appeal to The Ruler’s Men, who would investigate.

Such investigations are always time consuming. Sometimes the result is that I am cleared, other times I am found to be at fault and corrective action is taken.

I am expected to have enough time to do my job as Old Vampire Representative on The Committee.

If I do not have time, then I have to take it up with The Ruler’s Men and account for every second of my night.

Thankfully The Ruler did not specify how often I was to write this blog, so I write it around my other duties.

I hope my work will consume less of my time and I will be able to write more.

Maybe soon that the party season is nearly over as the nights are waning with the day’s increase, I will then be able to write more.

I remind the reader of this blog that parties are work for Old Vampires.

Few of the questions I am asked, especially as the night grows old, are pertinent. Of the ones that are pertinent, the querent needs to ask but would not dare to write a letter.

Committee Work

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Committee was formed so that humans, vampires and werewolves could co-exist peacefully.

The reality is that both Old and New Vampire representatives work to limit exposure of vampires. As far as possible we do not work together.

The humans work hard to stop non-human races killing humans; this just forces us to go underground.

It is only really werewolves who try and co-exist peacefully with humans. I do not see why, when most humans would probably kill werewolves if they knew of their existence. It is not like vampires, who humans think are “sexy”.

I do not see the point of co-existing peacefully with humans when they are prey and we are predators.

However, The Committee is useful for finding out what other races are planning.

Also, if Old Vampires are found out I will be contacted and can cover up.

If the information is on the internet I never bother covering it up. There are always rumours and conspiracy theories on the internet; when bored I add to them to see how far it will spread.

Some of my allies find my rumours amusing. Others think I go too far; if I were doing that The Ruler would step in and curtail my activities.

Cover-ups are always a nuisance, especially as it is difficult to kill humans. Instead I have to spike their drinks and send them home in a cab.

This can take several hours, but does not happen often as I will have more than words with the Old Vampires concerned.

I have had to deal with the occasional filming of Old Vampires – or rather, the non-appearance on film of them. Fortunately I have been able to persuade the film-makers that their cameras were faulty.

I have recently heard it said at parties that The Hunters are dead and buried.

Not literally; but people think the organisation as a whole is defunct and is only a tale to frighten debutante vampires.

My opinion is that it is just waiting until it can surface again and sink its teeth into us. Others dismiss this as a chilling thought; I prefer to prepare for the worst.

I quizzed Nosferatu, the New Vampire representative. Of course he would not tell me anything, but when I asked he did let slip some telling details.

The Committee passed the law that allows The Hunters to hunt us, so we can look for no help in that quarter, as neither the Human Police nor the werewolves are at all bothered about vampires hunting other vampires as long as we do not expose our existence to the humans.

In fact, they would be quite happy if we wiped each other out. Then werewolves could co-exist peacefully with humans and everyone could sing in perfect harmony, which is as likely as your latest government being beloved throughout the land.

At the moment The Hunters are posing around the streets, turning up near our castles and making threatening noises.

People see this as typical New Vampire behaviour : all of the looks, but none of the substance.

It is only the fact that our Ruler took action and decimated The Hunters that keeps them from hunting us.

If we changed Rulers, which we rarely do, they would try to hunt us again, so now they wait.

New Vampires do manage to wait well, especially the longer-lived ones and if they saw an opportunity would seize it by the jugular, just as we are waiting for an opportunity to get rid of them.
