Settling Down

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Things are still settling down after Tony won The Fence to become Head of The Hunters, who are now responsible for non-human lawbreakers.

Both Old Vampires and Old Vampire Servants are split over this; some of both are appalled that a former Old Vampire Servant has become Head, others think that it is a good thing and others have accepted that it is fact but do not like it.

Some have already investigated if Tony was trained, but no-one has been found to have trained him :  there are other ways to have helped him.

It will take a while for the furore to die down and if my finances were better, I would holiday and hope to return to a quieter place.

It was The Ruler’s decision to have The Fence and after a century The Hunters will become normal, especially if they are swift at meting out justice among lawbreakers and confine themselves to those.

I have appraised Tony of the instances when a Werewolf and an Old Vampire consent to fight for fun.  Tony agreed with me that there was no harm in it but he will discuss it with the other Heads as it now falls within their remit.

I suspect someone will volunteer to make sure the fight does not involve or is seen by any humans.

Tony himself continues to show aptitude; he has reverted to his birth name of Anthony Mazarròn which is more befitting his new station.

I asked Andy, the Human Representative on The Committee and the person overseeing The Hunters, to report back on the first meeting of The Heads of The Hunters.  He said it was no worse and no better than a Committee meeting; everyone was tense and there was plenty of backbiting but much was accomplished despite that.  It will be interesting to see how things develop.

Aftermath

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Tony has been invested as Head of The Hunters. Isabelle, the Old Vampire who Tony, former Old Vampire Servant beat to become Head of The Hunters, is looking exceedingly battered.

I suspect Tony has had to mete out discipline; it is not my place to enquire.

I met with Tony as soon as he became Head of The Hunters. He was flushed with jubilation and sporting one or two bruises that had nothing to do with The Fence.

Thankfully I had no need to warn him that internal politics in The Hunters will soon be labyrinthine; it seems that Old Vampire Servant politics are just as bad as Old Vampire politics because the more you ascend, the more limited positions become.

I have told him all he needs to know about werewolves and New Vampires; I also introduced him to Andy, the Human Police Representative.

Tony raised his eyebrows to me over that. I first had to inform him that if he had any objections, he would now have to voice them in public instead of behaving like a Servant.

He then verbally admitted that he saw no reason to include the humans. It seems he was not informed that Andy would be overseeing The Hunters. He was not happy with that, but as I told him, the humans have to be mollified and more importantly, we can work with Andy.

The ensuing appointment went well, with both men finding common ground while I sat in the background and occasionally interjected when one of them made an erroneous statement.

I also introduced him to Michelle, who does my old job at the prison. Michelle was keen to make his acquaintance, Tony much less so hers.

Tony will make a very competent Head of The Hunters; he has already made plans to meet with the other Heads.

The Fence

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Fence was a glorious occasion; I was invited into The Ruler’s box and plied with choice drink.

Unfortunately, I had a seat away from The Ruler at the side, but it was still one of the best seats in the house.

When I was led in I was presented to The Ruler and his retinue, but I did not speak to him apart from those few words.

The others in the retinue were busy with their own business, so I had little opportunity to converse with them and instead concentrated on The Fence.

In any Fence, only one person can fight another person. This was no different, but the combatants were paired up by being drawn out of a bag by the referee.

Two of the first pairings were Old Vampire Servant against Old Vampire Servant, leaving one pair of Old Vampires and one Old Vampire facing an Old Vampire Servant.

It was quite a shock to see Tony, who was an Old Vampire Servant, beat Stanley, who is an Old Vampire reputed to be a good fencer.

Stanley took his defeat in good grace and saluted the winner; a gesture not normally done but one that found favour with the crowd.

Tony beat his next opponent easily and was then faced with the Old Vampire Isabelle.

Isabelle is a fencer par excellence. I enquired about her teaching service for my fence, but was informed that she was unavailable.

The bout lasted several hours as riposte after parry was made until Isabelle made a small mistake and Tony scored his point.

Isabelle stormed off and has since sought my services to leave The Hunters. I had to inform her with regret that since she had accepted The Fence she was now a Hunter.

Tony has been invested as Head of The Hunters.

Uproar Over The Fence

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

There is still uproar over the fence to decide who heads the Old Vampire contingent of The Hunters; I have been unable to go to my club because I will be besieged by people asking me about it. I do not want to know any information as I have to remain impartial. I thought I would get some peace at home, but have had so many visitors I have instructed my servant Jane to inform people that I am not to be disturbed.

At work I have invested in one of these new-fangled answering machines; I cannot say I like it, but I am able to have the machine inform the caller that I am unable to involve myself in the fence and to leave a message if their business is about anything else.

That way I have fulfilled my brief of answering every query that comes into my office while ignoring any calls about the fence and thus I am able to give those with real problems my full attention.

Thankfully the date for the fence has been set for a week hence. This favours contestants who are not servants as Vampire Servants will have never picked up a sword before, whereas it is part of the training every Debutante Vampire goes through.

I had hoped that this change would quell gossip, but it has shifted to concentrate on those combatants who are not Servants.

Both Old Vampires and Old Vampire Servants are betting heavily on the outcome of The Fence. If it were not for the fact that The Ruler’s Men would visit me I would be mortgaging my house and joining in.

To be able to gamble again would be to come alive; waiting for the sound of a sword striking which removes points from an opponent and brings you nearer to defeat or success. I could lose my house over this; I would not care if I did.

Instead I will be dull and good and not bet a single penny.

The Fence has been Arranged

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Fence to decide who is heading the Old Vampire contingent of The Hunters has been arranged.  Since this is the first time Old Vampires and Old Vampire Servants are fencing together it has generated a lot of interest.

I do not know how Old Vampire Servants settle disputes and if I asked, it would not dignify an answer.

As the Old Vampire Representative on The Committee I am required to view the proceedings, which is a requirement that does not chafe.

I am barred from taking part or making recommendations to anyone as I must be impartial; I am allowed to know the names of the five Old Vampire Servants and three Old Vampires who are fencing and no more than that.

This eight are all who will be joining The Hunters from we Old Vampires; Our Ruler has decreed that everyone fence so the best will head the Old Vampire contingent of The Hunters.

All who enter the Fence will have to work with whoever is the victor; two have already come to me for my advice on how to pull out : I brokered them a deal with The Ruler’s Men that left them no worse than before.

It is said that some of the people who are fencing are not happy with the Fence.  Everyone will settle down after the fence and things will return to normal.

There is much consternation at the mix of classes; both Old Vampires and Old Vampire Servants are split between condemning this move and congratulating it.

I myself think it a good thing.  Other races have moved on and see the lower classes as good as the upper.

My Servant would have made a good Old Vampire with the correct training; I would have made a poor Servant.

Forming The Hunters

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

All non-human Representatives on The Committee are kept busy forming The Hunters.

The only exception is Darren, the New Vampire Representative, as The Hunters were originally only New Vampires.

It is easy to find Old Vampires who despise criminals and want to bring them in.  It is difficult to find those who will work with Werewolves and New Vampires.  I cannot blame them.

An Old Vampire will not take orders from a Werewolf or New Vampire; the same goes for the other two.

Thankfully The Ruler’s Men have given me several dossiers on Old Vampires that have proved useful in persuading them to become Hunters.

I have spoken to Terry, the butler at my club, who turned up with five Old Vampire servants who, for reasons best kept confidential, will become Hunters.

We Representatives have decided that The Hunters will be headed by the best of all three non-humans.

This means that one cannot take a decision without agreement from at least one of the others.

It is obvious to me that unfortunately Old Vampires will have to work with Werewolves or New Vampires from time to time; they will have to decide how best to work with other non-humans as I have had.

It has been decided that The Hunters will do no other job.  This means that there will often be times when there is nothing to do and they will be free to pursue their own interests.

Apparently, the New Vampires’ countenances brightened when they heard this.  The Old Vampires just nodded; every Old Vampire has times when there is nothing to do and they relax and pick up hobbies.

Who heads the Old Vampires will be decided by a Fence, usually only used for disputes.

New Department

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Ruler’s Men required that I call an emergency meeting of The Committee to discuss The Vampire Hunters.

This time I informed the participants of the agenda and asked Darren to bring his Vampire Hunters.

We walked in late and the Ruler’s Men did not introduce themselves.  They then said that I had done well under trying and unusual circumstances, but The Ruler had some stipulations to make.

The other Representatives tensed up at this.  The Ruler’s Men said that the Vampire Hunters would have been useful when we were catching the Old Vampire who had killed so many humans, but they would like to see them tempered with Old Vampires and Werewolves.

Darren said that he thought Old Vampires did not work with New Vampires and one of the Ruler’s Men looked at me and said that people could be found.  The Vampire Hunters looked at each other and confirmed they could work with Old Vampires and Werewolves.

Saskia, the Werewolf Representative, also said that she could find people who would work with vampires.

The upshot of this is that we now have a department called The Hunters who will find criminals and bring them to Andy, who is the Human Police Representative, to ensure they are guilty.

An Old Vampire will not work on finding an Old Vampire, the same with Werewolves and New Vampires.

Andy was a lot happier with this solution, as it means the Human Police now have a role in what happens.  He was less happy when we pointed out that his was only a watching brief and each non-human had a right to mete out justice according to their own kind’s rules.  For once, the rest of us agree fully with that.
