Uproar Over The Fence

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

There is still uproar over the fence to decide who heads the Old Vampire contingent of The Hunters; I have been unable to go to my club because I will be besieged by people asking me about it. I do not want to know any information as I have to remain impartial. I thought I would get some peace at home, but have had so many visitors I have instructed my servant Jane to inform people that I am not to be disturbed.

At work I have invested in one of these new-fangled answering machines; I cannot say I like it, but I am able to have the machine inform the caller that I am unable to involve myself in the fence and to leave a message if their business is about anything else.

That way I have fulfilled my brief of answering every query that comes into my office while ignoring any calls about the fence and thus I am able to give those with real problems my full attention.

Thankfully the date for the fence has been set for a week hence. This favours contestants who are not servants as Vampire Servants will have never picked up a sword before, whereas it is part of the training every Debutante Vampire goes through.

I had hoped that this change would quell gossip, but it has shifted to concentrate on those combatants who are not Servants.

Both Old Vampires and Old Vampire Servants are betting heavily on the outcome of The Fence. If it were not for the fact that The Ruler’s Men would visit me I would be mortgaging my house and joining in.

To be able to gamble again would be to come alive; waiting for the sound of a sword striking which removes points from an opponent and brings you nearer to defeat or success. I could lose my house over this; I would not care if I did.

Instead I will be dull and good and not bet a single penny.

The Fence has been Arranged

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Fence to decide who is heading the Old Vampire contingent of The Hunters has been arranged.  Since this is the first time Old Vampires and Old Vampire Servants are fencing together it has generated a lot of interest.

I do not know how Old Vampire Servants settle disputes and if I asked, it would not dignify an answer.

As the Old Vampire Representative on The Committee I am required to view the proceedings, which is a requirement that does not chafe.

I am barred from taking part or making recommendations to anyone as I must be impartial; I am allowed to know the names of the five Old Vampire Servants and three Old Vampires who are fencing and no more than that.

This eight are all who will be joining The Hunters from we Old Vampires; Our Ruler has decreed that everyone fence so the best will head the Old Vampire contingent of The Hunters.

All who enter the Fence will have to work with whoever is the victor; two have already come to me for my advice on how to pull out : I brokered them a deal with The Ruler’s Men that left them no worse than before.

It is said that some of the people who are fencing are not happy with the Fence.  Everyone will settle down after the fence and things will return to normal.

There is much consternation at the mix of classes; both Old Vampires and Old Vampire Servants are split between condemning this move and congratulating it.

I myself think it a good thing.  Other races have moved on and see the lower classes as good as the upper.

My Servant would have made a good Old Vampire with the correct training; I would have made a poor Servant.

Forming The Hunters

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

All non-human Representatives on The Committee are kept busy forming The Hunters.

The only exception is Darren, the New Vampire Representative, as The Hunters were originally only New Vampires.

It is easy to find Old Vampires who despise criminals and want to bring them in.  It is difficult to find those who will work with Werewolves and New Vampires.  I cannot blame them.

An Old Vampire will not take orders from a Werewolf or New Vampire; the same goes for the other two.

Thankfully The Ruler’s Men have given me several dossiers on Old Vampires that have proved useful in persuading them to become Hunters.

I have spoken to Terry, the butler at my club, who turned up with five Old Vampire servants who, for reasons best kept confidential, will become Hunters.

We Representatives have decided that The Hunters will be headed by the best of all three non-humans.

This means that one cannot take a decision without agreement from at least one of the others.

It is obvious to me that unfortunately Old Vampires will have to work with Werewolves or New Vampires from time to time; they will have to decide how best to work with other non-humans as I have had.

It has been decided that The Hunters will do no other job.  This means that there will often be times when there is nothing to do and they will be free to pursue their own interests.

Apparently, the New Vampires’ countenances brightened when they heard this.  The Old Vampires just nodded; every Old Vampire has times when there is nothing to do and they relax and pick up hobbies.

Who heads the Old Vampires will be decided by a Fence, usually only used for disputes.

New Department

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Ruler’s Men required that I call an emergency meeting of The Committee to discuss The Vampire Hunters.

This time I informed the participants of the agenda and asked Darren to bring his Vampire Hunters.

We walked in late and the Ruler’s Men did not introduce themselves.  They then said that I had done well under trying and unusual circumstances, but The Ruler had some stipulations to make.

The other Representatives tensed up at this.  The Ruler’s Men said that the Vampire Hunters would have been useful when we were catching the Old Vampire who had killed so many humans, but they would like to see them tempered with Old Vampires and Werewolves.

Darren said that he thought Old Vampires did not work with New Vampires and one of the Ruler’s Men looked at me and said that people could be found.  The Vampire Hunters looked at each other and confirmed they could work with Old Vampires and Werewolves.

Saskia, the Werewolf Representative, also said that she could find people who would work with vampires.

The upshot of this is that we now have a department called The Hunters who will find criminals and bring them to Andy, who is the Human Police Representative, to ensure they are guilty.

An Old Vampire will not work on finding an Old Vampire, the same with Werewolves and New Vampires.

Andy was a lot happier with this solution, as it means the Human Police now have a role in what happens.  He was less happy when we pointed out that his was only a watching brief and each non-human had a right to mete out justice according to their own kind’s rules.  For once, the rest of us agree fully with that.

Return of the Vampire Hunters

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Vampire Hunters have returned.  I realised a while ago that they went underground and knew they would surface sooner or later.

So, I was only partly surprised when I arrived at a meeting of The Committee and two of them were flanking the New Vampire Representative Darren.  It made a very pretty tableau.

I did not show my surprise, but made myself comfortable and waited for Darren to state their business.

Darren proposed that they hunt down any non-human who has committed a crime.

The proposal is sound enough, but I countered that the request must be made through a member of The Committee, as none of us would make false report.

I reminded them that our Ruler would not take kindly to non-existent crimes being investigated and was pleased to see a shudder pass through the bodies of The Vampire Hunters.

I also countered with the proposal that the representative of the suspects should be kept informed.

Andy, the Human Police Representative, was not happy with this last, but the relevant representative will find out in due course as ours is a small world.

I suspect the truth is that he is unhappy because he thinks all crimes should be the jurisdiction of the Human Police.

It is not just the fact that none of us non-humans wish to give humans any more insight into our worlds; it is also that they do not have the strength to hold a non-human and that last is why he is not protesting harder.

After some argument, all the Representatives agreed to my proposal.

Afterwards I went straight to my office and made a report to The Ruler as the matter is grave.  I have done the best I could with the material I had; I hope they will see it that way.

Columbine

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

One day, among my morning post, was a letter from Columbine demanding to know why I had not been to see her.

Since she is a New Vampire and I have been told by their new representative Darren not to interfere in their business, I felt it only courteous to place a telephone call to him.

I explained the situation and he thanked me for calling him and said that since the request had been made by Columbine he would not prevent it.  He is clearly not the fool his predecessor was.

So, I submitted a Visiting Order to the prison and in due time I was in line being searched so I could see Columbine.

I find this process of being searched beneath me and had to fight hard to contain my snarl.

In the end I was escorted to Columbine’s cell.  I found it and her appearance much changed for the better.

Unfortunately, I could not say the same for her attitude.  She immediately launched into a tirade about why I had not been to see her.

I waited until she had finished and then coldly informed her that her representative had made it plain that I was not to interfere in New Vampire business, also I had felt it best to wait until she was of sound mind to visit.

That put paid to her tirade and she actually apologised to me.  I suspect Darren has been teaching her the manners I wished I could have taught her had she been an Old Vampire.

After that, the conversation was cordial for the first time and we discussed vampire life outside the prison.

I fear that unlike my servant Jane, Columbine is too undisciplined to ever make an Old Vampire.  However, there are some New Vampire habits Jane has which make me shudder.

Quiet

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

It has been quiet since my last post; I find these periods when you have absolutely nothing to do happen once every few years.

The quiet is because most humans are on holiday or scurrying off to send their children to school.

Werewolves have children, so have to obey the humans’ rules about school and holidays.  It is also not full moon, which makes their behaviour erratic and can create problems, so they are quiet for both these reasons.

Neither Old nor New Vampires have children, but since the incident about contaminated blood sent shockwaves through the community we are busy shaking up our suppliers.

They are now providing evidence of non-contamination, which is a test done on a sample of each batch.

Parties are full of people comparing methods of testing blood and soliciting my opinion on them.

I am seen to be the expert as I discovered this contamination.  I disabuse the querents of this but leave them with my opinion of such.

For the first time in many decades I am rejecting party invitations as I do not wish to spend yet another few hours discussing this subject once more.

I enjoy these periods of quiet, more so now I do not have to w.o.r.k. in the day at the prison.

Unlike there, I stay only until I have no more work to do.  My day starts at 8 in the evening and may end at midnight; it may also end at noon.

If I have no further business at my office, I leave to go home or to my club.  If there is urgent business, the telephone at home or at the club will summon me.

The club is half-empty at the moment.  It is ideal for reading the newspapers and relaxing with a quiet drink before going home to sleep.

Unfortunately, it will not last for long.  Until then I have a rare taste of what it is like to be my own mistress.
