Quiet

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

It has been quiet since my last post; I find these periods when you have absolutely nothing to do happen once every few years.

The quiet is because most humans are on holiday or scurrying off to send their children to school.

Werewolves have children, so have to obey the humans’ rules about school and holidays.  It is also not full moon, which makes their behaviour erratic and can create problems, so they are quiet for both these reasons.

Neither Old nor New Vampires have children, but since the incident about contaminated blood sent shockwaves through the community we are busy shaking up our suppliers.

They are now providing evidence of non-contamination, which is a test done on a sample of each batch.

Parties are full of people comparing methods of testing blood and soliciting my opinion on them.

I am seen to be the expert as I discovered this contamination.  I disabuse the querents of this but leave them with my opinion of such.

For the first time in many decades I am rejecting party invitations as I do not wish to spend yet another few hours discussing this subject once more.

I enjoy these periods of quiet, more so now I do not have to w.o.r.k. in the day at the prison.

Unlike there, I stay only until I have no more work to do.  My day starts at 8 in the evening and may end at midnight; it may also end at noon.

If I have no further business at my office, I leave to go home or to my club.  If there is urgent business, the telephone at home or at the club will summon me.

The club is half-empty at the moment.  It is ideal for reading the newspapers and relaxing with a quiet drink before going home to sleep.

Unfortunately, it will not last for long.  Until then I have a rare taste of what it is like to be my own mistress.

Offices

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The offices of The Committee are quite sumptuous, which makes the Human Police representative uneasy.

However, humans were not present at their creation and for once the Werewolves agreed with we Old Vampires that there should be some style and élan in our offices.

The offices are panelled in carved wood, which has been stained dark.  The carpet is a dark green since no-one cares for a carpet which resembles blood.  It would be distracting for all the members.

We have bookshelves which house bound reports of Committee meetings and a few books, such as copies of Dracula.

Apart from the bookshelves the only furniture is a large table with elegant chairs.

The table seats eight and has not yet been full, but that ensures there is enough space between each member of The Committee.  It is unusual for a member to bring anyone else to a meeting, but occasionally circumstances do warrant it.

The room and the table are both lit by desk lamps.  I suspect it is the darkness of the room which makes the Human Police representative uncomfortable and the rest of us at home.  Unlike the rest of us, the Human Police have always refused to spend money on furnishings.

At the front desk there has always been a representative of Old Vampires, New Vampires and Werewolves as we could not decide which of us would staff the front desk when.

In recent years they have been joined by a representative of the Human Police.  Not one of the receptionists trusts the others, with the benefit that security is especially tight.

From the outside the offices look like just another building, as the last thing we want to do is to draw attention to ourselves.

Portsmouth

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

I have recently been asked why the offices of The Committee are in Portsmouth and not London.

This is because while London is the capital and anything can be found there, Portsmouth and Southampton have always been the ports of docking for people; more importantly the non-human people.

Old Vampires preferred Portsmouth as there was a good chance of being attacked by sailors, who make a good meal.

Werewolves preferred Southampton, but since New Vampires also preferred Portsmouth the offices of The Committee are there.

If there had even been a vague chance of Old and New Vampires co-operating the Werewolves would have raised more of an outcry at this.

It was only later on that the Human Police started showing an interest in non-humans, particularly vampires.   A compromise was brokered between us and as a result the Human Police joined The Committee.

From Portsmouth non-humans were either sent to Southampton or London as they had the best transport links.  In recent centuries it was not unknown to wander through a train and find a werewolf and New Vampire glowering at one another from different ends of the carriage in third class.

So Portsmouth became where non-humans were processed.  I suspect New Vampires did as they pleased; among Old Vampires it is expected that you will be a guest at your host’s expense.  Your host is usually an ally of yours; if not then it is an opportunity to cultivate a new ally.

We Old Vampires have always had someone to welcome us into Britain as the new arrival may be fleeing from a mob, have little in the way of possessions with them and need time to obtain access to important bank accounts.

Caught

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Andy, who is the Human Police Representative and Darren, who is the new New Vampire representative have caught the human behind the contaminated blood supplies.

Unfortunately, I had not been able to help since Darren had made it clear it was New Vampire business and Michelle, the Old Vampire who supplied the blood, had been exonerated.

I have not visited Columbine, the New Vampire whose blood supply was contaminated as this would only confuse matters; I contented myself by sending her a get-well card.

The perpetrator was a human prisoner who thought Columbine was getting preferential treatment.

In a way, she does. The cell she is in needs to be strong enough to keep any vampire caged and vampires, Old or New, are not permitted to mix with humans so have extra visitors. Otherwise she is treated like any other prisoner.

Andy is annoyed that the perpetrator has disappeared and it irks me that I have to agree with the New Vampires but there really is no other way to deal with the situation.

The perpetrator was on Basic, which meant that everything that could be taken away from her had already been done so.

She is on an ISPP sentence, which means that she stays a prisoner until the parole board determine that she is no longer a risk to society.

I asked him how someone on Basic could have contaminated blood supplies; he looked sour and said that Security was “looking into it”.

All that means is that the personnel currently in Security will be shuffled around the prison and a new set of people will be in Security. It does not mean that security will get better.

Resources are tight and Michelle informs me that the staff are stretched to breaking point. Thankfully this is not something I have to deal with.

Explaining

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

I have had some explaining to do lately.  I was “invited” to my club and told to sit down amidst a gathering of my peers.

I was then told I had been entertaining New Vampires regularly at my “place of residence”.

My jaw dropped at this.  Someone must have seen the new New Vampire Representative enter my home and lose no time in selling on this information.

I mustered my composure and replied that only one New Vampire had entered my home and surely this is a matter for The Ruler’s Men.

There was uproar at this and when the room had quietened down an ally of mine called James asked me why even one New Vampire was entering my home.

I explained that it was the new New Vampire Representative who had come on business and that, as much as I wanted to, I had no grounds to refuse him as he was observing Old Vampire etiquette.

That drew murmurs from the crowd and looks of sympathy from my allies, because we all observe the proper etiquette and if they had been in my place could not have refused Darren entry.

I then remembered what I learnt from the Human Police Representative, looked them straight in their eyes and asked if they had any proof.

There were more mutters at this and so I asked if they had any eyewitnesses and the mutters dissipated somewhat.

So, I sighed and said that I was sorry they had gone to all this trouble on the strength of bad information, stood up and left.

Jane was waiting for me in a state of agitation when I came home and I had to spend some time dispelling her fears that we would be turned out of the house I own.  It is only New Vampires who act like mobs.

Replacement

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Nosferatu has been replaced.  We have not been informed why, but my conjecture is that Columbine’s contaminated blood proved that he was not serving his people.

The first I knew was when Jane brought his replacement’s card in to my home.  This was the first time a New Vampire had come to my home, but since he was observing our social etiquette I could not refuse him.

Jane showed what appeared to be a bowler-hatted businessman into the room and left to arrange drinks.  No doubt she had made enquiries as to his preferences when showing him in.

After some small talk, I congratulated him on his new post, which opened the way for the business which brought him here.

It seems he wanted to “come to an understanding” about Columbine and find out what my interest in her was.

I freely admitted my fall from grace since this New Vampire is obviously no fool (unlike his predecessor) and would be wondering why I have no castle unlike my peers.

I then informed him that I was hoping Columbine would share some information that may have currency, or more likely, someone would have need of knowledge about New Vampires in the future.

He gave a small nod and informed me that while Columbine was free to have any visitors she chose, New Vampires would be taking back the delivery of blood to the New Vampires in the prison.

He passed the details of his associate who would be working there to me.  I have already met with Michelle and appraised her of the situation.  He also informed me that the perpetrator was theirs to deal with, as any perpetrator who contaminated Old Vampire blood supplies would be ours.

After that, he made his goodbyes and left.  I will carry on visiting Columbine as long as she will see me.

Emergency

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

It is the first time that anyone has called an emergency session of The Committee and I needed the threat of personally dragging everyone down to our offices in North End, Portsmouth to ensure attendance.

Once I had them there I gave them ten minutes to worry about what was going on and walked in late.

As one, they rose and opened their mouths and when they saw my face as one they slunk down in their seats.

Saskia, the Werewolf Representative, then correctly identified the fluid in my container as blood contaminated with acid, where I retorted that I had removed it from Columbine’s cell.

The New Vampire Representative, Nosferatu, cowered in his seat and started muttering excuses about being busy and left to “make enquiries” after he could not face the stares of the others.

The others are Andy who is the Human Police Representative and Saskia, who I must admit look after their people well.

Andy asked if security at the prison knew and I said “I had a word” with them and he left to make enquiries.

Saskia asked how long this has been going on. I had to admit that I do not know because poor Columbine only has short periods of lucidity at the moment.

Andy returned to say that security had no clue what was going on and it would be better if The Committee took the situation in hand.

I had been hoping he would say that but did not want to exceed my authority as the current Ruler can be punitive with those who do.

Andy has taken charge of the matter. As his job involves investigating incidents he is best placed to take control of the situation. Also, because he is human he will receive more co-operation from the prison authorities than I or Nosferatu ever would.
