Divorce

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The divorce is going well. Henry has set a date for the hearing, which is in a couple of months’ time.

I now have to collate all documents and provide witnesses as to the state of our marriage and reasons why I want a divorce.

I am divorcing Jeremy on the grounds that he is not a fit husband for an Old Vampire and was not fulfilling his duties.

Disappearing to “find himself” will aid me there. It is not the done thing to disappear unless your life is in danger. Any other reason will cause a stir.

I have also managed to get Adele to obtain information for me gratis by pointing out that if she wishes to sell my Obligation and the divorce does not go my way, then the price for it will plummet.

If I am successful then she should be able to get a good price for my Obligation.

Adele does not like this, but will acquiesce because she will get something out of it.

The witnesses will attend because they will be able to dine out on the spectacle of my divorce, whatever the result is.

My servant Jane is also hard at work obtaining information as she does not want to go back to working in a castle under a butler.

She feels that she is quite comfortable as and where she is and does not want to change.

Jeremy will be amassing documentation and witnesses as well. I do not know who he will call, but you can never tell which way a witness will side until they are on the stand.

While on the stand we tell the truth to the best of our knowledge of how the situation is.

There are stories of people of whom it was proved they had deliberately lied and no Old Vampire wants to end up like they did.

People have heard that I am divorcing Jeremy.

The reaction mainly falls into two camps : the first are those who tell me that I am so brave to do this and invite me to their parties for the entertainment I can give.

The second are those who condemn me for not being a “proper vampire” or a “good wife” and cross the street when they see me.

I have never aspired to be a good wife and I ask the men telling me this if they are good husbands. Then they fluster and splutter and make excuses.

As usual, it is more difficult dealing with the condemnation of the women. I have had to hold my head up under scorn and censure.

Adele helps with some of it, as my worth as an Obligatee will diminish if I do not come out of this well.

Henry, who is hearing this case, tells me to ignore them. He is dining out on this case and will make much capital out of it whatever is decided. He does not have face any detractors and is enjoying himself to the full.

To say Jeremy is unhappy is an understatement. He turned up at my house shouting and swearing at my poor servant Jane.

She did not know what to do and I was unavailable, so she called the Human Representative on the Committee, who is also a Policeman. With the threat of arrest hanging over Jeremy he was forced to retreat and I now owe Andy a considerable favour.

This behaviour will not look good to a Judge, as we do not involve Servants in our affairs.

Unfortunately Jane has come under scrutiny because of this incident and my divorce.

Fortunately senior servants have decided that she cannot be held responsible for her employers’ whims and peccadillos (their words!) and upheld her conduct. Apparently they are revising their Code of Conduct because of this incident.

Obligation

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Unfortunately Adele has taken me at my word and asked me to obtain increased information from the prison.

This information is facts and figures which should not be leaving the prison, but neither myself nor Andy, the Human Police Representative, can see why she wants them.

The prison is not politically sensitive to Old Vampires or Humans. Such things are dirty words to Old Vampires and Humans do not much like them either.

However, Andy has obtained the correct information for me and is keeping a close eye on the situation.

Since Adele is my Obligator, I must do as she says until I pay her off and if I had the money I would not be working for a living.

I believe she is aware of my association with Columbine, who is the New Vampire in prison that I visit.

She has issued no instructions yet as to what I am doing with Columbine, but has dropped hints about her. I believe she wants deniability of the situation. It is not that Old Vampires are forbidden, socially or by law, to speak to New Vampires, it is just that people think it is distasteful to do it.

It is my opinion that all information may be useful at some time and this is the sort that if needed, could be very useful to some important people, who will not be ungrateful.

So I carry on as usual with this Obligation. I have taken pains to see that, while I cannot get out of it, it is easy for me to deal with.

I admit that part of this is because Adele has roughly the same allies that I have, so I do not have any conflict of interest.

The other part is that the jobs she gives me are easy and do not involve other people.

Return

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

While I would like to say that I was sent off on some mysterious errand that I cannot talk about, my reasons for not writing for many months are much more plebeian.

My w.o.r.k. asked me to do overtime as Ofsted was due to arrive at the Education Department in the prison where I work.  Also Adele required me to do several tasks, which were quite onerous.  Adele was an ally to whom I am now Obligated to, who wanted me to arrange meetings between herself and various humans in the prison.

I have informed Andy, the Human Police Representative, of the situation.

It took a lot of explaining, but since he is favourable to me at the moment he may prove to be an ally if I am questioned by humans.

Of course, these requests were not breaking any laws, Old Vampire or Human, but are very unusual.

Andy was suspicious that Adele wants to meet prison officials; this confirmed that she is up to something, although neither Andy nor I can see what she would get out of a meeting with them.

I would enjoy naming these officials in this blog, but I am forbidden to by Adele, who is my Obligator.

There is no “getting around it” or forgetting about this injunction : Old Vampire law is clear that Obligators have to be obeyed.

I explained to Andy that we Old Vampires are used to waiting and in time we would be able to find out exactly what she was up to.

This mollified him a bit, although he retorted that he hoped it wouldn’t be too late when we did.

Unfortunately he is accurate with this statement, but there is little I can do besides watching and waiting since Adele has told me not to discuss my Obligation or any requests she makes of me to any other Old Vampires.

Fighting

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

For the first time I have watched humans perform martial arts. It was most interesting seeing the humans’ economy of movement and how they defend themselves.

Any vampire, even a New Vampire, is still too fast for a human, however skilled they are.

It amuses me that humans must defend themselves against other humans and walk around afraid of being attacked.

We Old Vampires use the fence to air any grievances which have escalated as far as fighting.

I still owe Gerhardt a favour for training me to win my last fence. I have no doubt that unless he is careless enough to get himself killed he will someday collect.

For grievances which have not got as far as fighting there are always our machinations and allies to fall back on.

While being a New Vampire is cause enough for us to attack them it causes too much trouble.

If we meet while hunting both parties walk out of the area. It is the only way as neither would give way to one another.

Neither I nor Nosferatu (the New Vampire representative) relish being called out to deal with such a thing and for once we are both in accord that whoever disturbs us must pay.

He is more physical in taking payment, while I view allies and obligations to be worth more than favours.

Unfortunately these days I must take money, as I need to pay off my obligation to Adele.

All Old Vampires are schooled in boxing techniques in case we need to fight outside the fence.

It would be embarrassing in so many ways if I lost to a New Vampire; embarrassing in nearly as many other ways to another Old Vampire.

Even before New Vampires existed Werewolves had no love for us and some would try to kill us, so we had to be prepared.

Humans were never a problem unless a mob got together. One or two together we could take quite easily.

Obligation

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

This Obligation is pulling me in deeper and deeper. Adele is asking for more and more information from me; some of it is not information I wish to give.

The terms she asks for the information with are still fluid enough so I can get around them and give her false information.

Other information she wants is fairly innocuous : information on the vampires held and what facilities they avail themselves of.

Information on vampires is the only information I am freely allowed to take outside the prison, as no-one would ever help a vampire in prison.

I am only involved in the prison as I have to work there and provide information to The Committee on the vampires in its environs.

I have still been unable to find out why Adele wants information on the prison. Apart from the vampires and werewolves housed in it, it is a human concern.

Adele is no longer inviting me to parties, so she must be concerned that I will find out.

She has spread the story that I have asked her for a loan one time too often and we have fallen out.

It worries me that, once again, I am being pulled into something deeper than I wish to be.

I have bled Obligatees deeply for information until they have been unable to give any more; whereupon I have sold their Obligations or used them until they are no longer of any use to me.

However, I will not yet be able to buy myself out of this Obligation and must do the best I can.

I have avoided doing anything that would lower my Status and asked an Obligatee to do it instead.

It seems that whoever we are, from time to time we all find ourselves in a situation that we are unable to escape.

Obligation

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Adele has annoyingly picked up my Obligation from where it was before the servants’ strike and is demanding information from me once again.

The strike was a pleasant respite from my Obligation; but an Obligation is only finished with when it has been paid off.

What is interesting is that she wants to know information about the prison I work in.

Every other Old Vampire changes the subject when they hear about it; prisoners are quite properly beneath them.

It is frustrating that I have not been able to find out why she wants this information; Adele’s operations usually leak information like a sieve but this one is sewn up tight.

It is possible that she is either being paid for this information or is under an Obligation herself.

The Status Keeper knows exactly who is Obligated to whom, but it takes time, money or favours (or a combination of these) for the rest of us to find out.

I sometimes pass information to an Obligatee who has come for a “prison visit” if I have nothing better for them to do.

We Obligatees do not get paid for our pains.  I have to keep a check on mine or they will become disobedient and flout my demands.

You have to keep your Obligatees active, or they start to slip out of your control.

No-one likes being an Obligatee and the Obligation always chafes.  If they cannot get out of it they will find a way around it.

Last time I gave Adele information that was obviously wrong; she has not yet noticed it.

Many Old Vampires have found themselves under an Obligation at one time or another; this is my first time and I am not enjoying it.
