Offices

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The offices of The Committee are quite sumptuous, which makes the Human Police representative uneasy.

However, humans were not present at their creation and for once the Werewolves agreed with we Old Vampires that there should be some style and élan in our offices.

The offices are panelled in carved wood, which has been stained dark.  The carpet is a dark green since no-one cares for a carpet which resembles blood.  It would be distracting for all the members.

We have bookshelves which house bound reports of Committee meetings and a few books, such as copies of Dracula.

Apart from the bookshelves the only furniture is a large table with elegant chairs.

The table seats eight and has not yet been full, but that ensures there is enough space between each member of The Committee.  It is unusual for a member to bring anyone else to a meeting, but occasionally circumstances do warrant it.

The room and the table are both lit by desk lamps.  I suspect it is the darkness of the room which makes the Human Police representative uncomfortable and the rest of us at home.  Unlike the rest of us, the Human Police have always refused to spend money on furnishings.

At the front desk there has always been a representative of Old Vampires, New Vampires and Werewolves as we could not decide which of us would staff the front desk when.

In recent years they have been joined by a representative of the Human Police.  Not one of the receptionists trusts the others, with the benefit that security is especially tight.

From the outside the offices look like just another building, as the last thing we want to do is to draw attention to ourselves.

Committee

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Nosferatu, the New Vampire Representative, has heard about my divorce.

He spent the last meeting of The Committee making remarks about it, until Sasha, who is the Werewolf Representative, said that she didn’t care if I was or was not getting divorced as long as he “shut his trap” about it.

Rather a crass comment to make, but the sentiment behind it is an admirable one.

Since it was followed up by a snarl and bare of teeth, Nosferatu shut up. Although the fact that it was close to the full moon may have had something to do with that.

Andy, the Human Representative, expressed his sympathies then when I said that I was glad to be rid of my husband looked confused and a silence descended upon the meeting.

It seems that whether you are undead or human, a woman must have a man. Of course, a man can function perfectly well on his own.

I do not know why this is. I have been functioning perfectly well without Jeremy and since Old Vampires do not feel emotions I have no need to be wedded to any man just for the sake of tradition.

People have been muttering at me that it will “end the sanctity of marriage”. I think these people have been around humans too much.

If there is a financial or a political reason for Old Vampires to get married, then even if they do not care about tradition (which is highly unlikely) they will still get married.

If Jeremy could provide me with a castle and thus restore me to the way of life we used to enjoy then I would not be initiating divorce.

Unfortunately in his haste to “find himself” he got rid of all “ties that could bind me” which includes financial and property constraints, if there would have been anything left after his debts had been called in.

Downsides

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

There is a downside to all things as well as an upside. So it is with Michelle doing my old job at the prison, as I recently found out that I have to supervise her.

This means that I am liable for what she does or does not do. Fortunately I was able to argue the case that I am only liable for what she does or does not do inside of prison walls, as I cannot supervise her life or that would require me forever watching her. After a long time of discussion and debate, The King’s Men agreed with my point.

This means that once a month I have to enter the prison and go over her work with her. I think I will have to have a little talk with her before she starts about what is and what is not expected of her.

Adele has learnt that I no longer work at the prison at a date when I thought everyone knew. She entered my office as I was starting work one night and started screaming at me.

She thought I was now virtually useless as an Obligatee to her. I pointed out that I was still entering the prison once a month and was sure I could meet any demands she set.

Thankfully she calmed down at this. While I do not like being her Obligatee I do not want her to sell my Obligation to someone who is an enemy of myself and our allies, which could prove disastrous for myself.

I did let the screaming fit go on for some time as it was fun to watch, but one of the downsides is that anything I do for Adele will be more difficult. However, I am confident I will find a way.

Another downside to my job is that I have no excuse for taking a while to answer a letter from an Old Vampire. Yet another is that while missives such as “why are you consorting with werewolves” used to get lost in the post, I have been informed that this rarely happens in the modern day Post Office.

Meeting

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Andy, the Human Police Representative, is finally talking to me.

This is mainly due to a Committee meeting where the subject of the killer was brought up.

Sasha, the Werewolf Representative, was horrified and we had a diatribe of an hour on what were we going to do about it and why hadn’t we caught the killer yet.

It was best to let her get it out of her system rather than change the subject and have her raise it at a later date.

Nosferatu, the New Vampire Representative, sat there looking smug and pleased with himself.

Fortunately he made a joke about the situation, which was the reason I needed to wipe the smile off his face and he soon found himself flat on the floor with some bones broken rather painfully.

Unfortunately he will heal. I only hope that the damage I have done is sufficient to slow healing down.

He shrieked for Andy to intervene, but Andy remarked that he did not have any authority over fights between vampires, only when there were humans involved and thus could not do anything.

Nosferatu has since attempted to have me censured for this, but due to the circumstances of the fight, no-one is at all interested.

I also added insult to injury and commented that I could see why New Vampires could not possibly have done this as they were not capable.

Of course, this left him in a seething heap on the floor, from which he summoned assistance and left.

The atmosphere of the meeting became relaxed after this, which is a first since I have been attending.

Then again, for once all the Representatives in the room were in agreement, if only on one thing; we all want this killer stopped.

Committee Work

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Committee was formed so that humans, vampires and werewolves could co-exist peacefully.

The reality is that both Old and New Vampire representatives work to limit exposure of vampires. As far as possible we do not work together.

The humans work hard to stop non-human races killing humans; this just forces us to go underground.

It is only really werewolves who try and co-exist peacefully with humans. I do not see why, when most humans would probably kill werewolves if they knew of their existence. It is not like vampires, who humans think are “sexy”.

I do not see the point of co-existing peacefully with humans when they are prey and we are predators.

However, The Committee is useful for finding out what other races are planning.

Also, if Old Vampires are found out I will be contacted and can cover up.

If the information is on the internet I never bother covering it up. There are always rumours and conspiracy theories on the internet; when bored I add to them to see how far it will spread.

Some of my allies find my rumours amusing. Others think I go too far; if I were doing that The Ruler would step in and curtail my activities.

Cover-ups are always a nuisance, especially as it is difficult to kill humans. Instead I have to spike their drinks and send them home in a cab.

This can take several hours, but does not happen often as I will have more than words with the Old Vampires concerned.

I have had to deal with the occasional filming of Old Vampires – or rather, the non-appearance on film of them. Fortunately I have been able to persuade the film-makers that their cameras were faulty.

The Committee

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Committee mainly deals with exposures or potential exposures of non-human races, including marches and protests.

We Old Vampires have too much money to do the latter. Why stir ourselves to protest with rabble when we can affect the status quo with money and influence?

It is mainly Werewolves who are actively protesting, leading marches and trying to better their race.

New Vampires will sign petitions, usually in gothic script, but generally cannot afford the sunscreen we use.

Opinion of Old Vampires is divided between : “what a shame, we could have had fun with them” to pride that those who call themselves New Vampires are unable to be as we are.

Unfortunately these protests are usually well within the Human law. There are those of us who have toyed with placing agent provocateurs at protests, but the Human police are quite capable of finding out that we are the ones behind this and they are capable of making our lives uncomfortable.

My opinion is always asked about this before plans are put into operation and my answer is always the same : that it would certainly result in a loss of Status and our Ruler would not be pleased.

So we watch from the sidelines with amusement and take bets on the outcome, amount of placards and how many times the ambulance will be called out, as even in a calm protest someone will collapse from the heat or sprain their ankle.

There is always the chance that a werewolf will lose control, although they are not fool enough to schedule nor attend such near a full moon.

I admit this has only happened twice, but it is difficult for werewolves afterwards to pretend they would fit in well with the human population.

Committee Meeting

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The last Committee meeting was a quiet one. Sometimes we have nothing to report on non-human activity and this is one of the quiet times.

I suspect it is largely down to the continuing cold weather, especially as the Werewolf Representative was hunkered down in her chair in a thick coat, despite the heating.

I neither commented on nor asked about this as it is not the done thing. We all have peccadilloes common to our species and none of us wants them on show.

Unfortunately we must have a proper meeting for at least an hour without killing or injuring one another, which is much more likely than sharing tea and having a sing-song.

So we let Nosferatu, the New Vampire representative, drone on about his latest pet project. The fool wants to know exactly which New Vampires are in the country.

I openly laughed when he said this fifteen minutes into his speech, as it is a impossible task with beings that can fly.

Our Status Keeper has a good idea of whom is residing in Britain, but does not know about visitors and we Old Vampires have a habit of dropping off the map for a few decades to throw humans off the scent, then surfacing and fitting right back into our lives.

Of course Nosferatu was furious with me and had another brainless rant, which took care of another half an hour.

It would have been shorter, but the Police Representative kept interjecting inflammatory comments to keep things going.

He eventually calmed down and the rest of us thought it a good idea to leave.

It would have been a good idea an hour ago, but someone decided it was the right length for a meeting.

Enlivening a Meeting

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Committee meetings are so tedious. Once I managed to suggest to Nosferatu, who is the New Vampire Representative, to bring some blood to the meeting to liven things up.

He duly placed it in the middle of the table while taking credit for the whole idea, as I knew he would.

As soon as the blood was on the table, Saskia, who is the Werewolf Representative, was on the other side of the room with hackles raised.

Andy, the Human Police Representative, spent the next hour interrogating Nosferatu who had gone one step further than I thought he would and brought rats’ blood as a drink. Whether they actually do or do not drink it I do not know.

When Saskia realised it was rats’ blood she calmed down, was back over to the table and all but drinking the blood in her interest.

On the other hand, when Andy realised that it was rats’ blood it was obvious that he couldn’t wait to get away from it. After that he questioned Nosferatu quite intensively and continued until his feelings had been assuaged.

He knew that he didn’t have a leg to stand on since the blood was legal, but it was so nice seeing him interrogating Nosferatu for a good hour over it. I sat back and watched the show.

Then Saskia and Andy were upset because I showed no emotions over this event and they called me a cold-blooded vampire. You do not reach my age without being called a lot worse.

I explained that we could catch no diseases from rats, so while I find rats’ blood disgusting it is also quite safe.

That mollified Andy, but Saskia went on about it as if it had been human blood.

I thought they had been upset enough that night, so mollified her with the fact that it could have been donated quite harmlessly. In reality I do not know or care.

Marches and Protests

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The Committee mainly deals with exposures or potential exposures of non-human races, including marches and protests.

A few months ago we had to discuss the strike our Servants had. I easily persuaded them that it was a matter best dealt with internally and would not spill out into their remit.

Unfortunately I had to endure barbed comments from all the other Representatives because I had said our people would never strike.

Old Vampires have too much money and power to protest or go on marches. We prefer to work behind the scenes and manipulate events to our satisfaction.

However, both werewolves and New Vampires will happily threaten to protest or go on marches, mainly when they feel they are not being treated well by the other races.

Neither of these races has the money or the power that we Old Vampires and the humans have.

Occasionally, when diplomacy has failed, the threat has been carried out and the Human Police have not been happy that they have had to keep the peace at these events. From their perspective the threat of death or dismemberment is great.

However, I must admit that both werewolves and New Vampires protest much more quietly than humans and take care not to hurt any of them.

This is because the Human Police Representative has made it clear that anyone who injures any human in a protest will be facing time in jail, which I gather is an embarrassment to werewolves and an annoyance to New Vampires.

Our Servants kept the protest quiet as afterwards they had to go back to their employers so did not want to let the side down. I gather the butlers protesting dealt with any infractions of this speedily.

Disliked

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

I am not liked on The Committee, but that does not matter. We Old Vampires do not need to make friends with people and the other members of The Committee are not even that.

On The Committee we merely tolerate one another, except that fool of a New Vampire representative, who is trying to be friends with the others.

He invited them “down the pub” last time; everyone made excuses to avoid the event. He will read this blog entry and disbelieve that everyone made excuses, saying that it wasn’t like that.

We Committee members spend as little time in one another’s company as possible and merely tolerate one another at meetings.

If Old Vampires are friends with humans it is only to get nearer to the prey, for political reasons or if they are of any use to us.

The Human Police Representative quite rightly gives us vampires the cold shoulder.

He is more sympathetic towards werewolves; after all, they do not kill humans on a daily basis.

Werewolves do not want to socialise with other races; they keep themselves to themselves, but since they have to work with humans must socialise with them at some point.

I have seen them socialising with humans and they are always poised to run or fight.

They do not like us as we are comfortable with killing humans; werewolves vehemently oppose such things.

I wonder if they are trying to be better than humans; from what I have seen it would not take much effort.

There are no political alliances on The Committee. Deals are done between representatives to ensure that what you want to happen does happen.

When a deal is made, everyone keeps their end of the bargain. If not, no-one would make a deal with you again.
