Working with Humans

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Working with humans is absolutely vile.  They find ways to shirk duties and disappear off ostensibly on business, but in reality they waste time talking to friends.

Meanwhile, I am left doing all the drudge tasks at work.  I am here to do my job and end up doing the filing.

It is a good thing there are other Old Vampires to talk to, which unlike what the humans do, is part of my duties.

Old Vampires who are in prison cannot socialise with human prisoners.

If a fight broke out, an Old Vampire is stronger than a human and could easily kill, by accident or design.

If it was self defence, the Old Vampire would not be blamed, but it would take some explaining.

Also Old Vampires do not want to socialise with human criminals, as we see all criminals as beneath us.  If an Old Vampire prisoner did not talk to anyone they would go mad.

Part of the problem in my work is that the humans do not wish to talk to me and I do not wish to talk to the humans.

So I do my duties in silence, listening out for any information that could be useful to me.

Often it is, especially if I am around the corner doing filing.  Old Vampires’ ears hear much better than humans’ do, so it is not difficult to know everything that goes on in the department that I am in.

This is how I survive.  By listening to talk and dropping a word in the ears of those I work for from time to time.

If I did not, they would oust me from my place and ask for another Old Vampire to work at this prison.

I would be happy to give up work, but I need the money, which is how I came to be asked politely by The Ruler’s Men to take up this position in the first place.

Michael

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

Michael, who is the Old Vampire who killed humans, is being released from The King’s Men next week.

This means a meeting with Andy, the Human Police Representative, to arrange interviews with Michael for which I have to be on hand to make sure he behaves.

Curious that these should take place over the Christmas period and my servant Jane is not happy about it, but I have duties to perform and as I told her, The Ruler would not be happy if I didn’t perform these duties.

I have already had one meeting with Andy to underline the fact that no human should attempt to harm Michael.

While it is quite understandable that humans should want him to fall down the stairs, harm caused to humans who attempt to harm Old Vampires is not covered by current law.

This is a good thing, but I draw the line at a criminal such as Michael harming humans, unless they are stupid enough to ignore my warning.

I am also tasked with Michael’s rehabilitation. The Ruler has decided that he could be a productive member of society, as others who have been convicted of killing humans are now.

It would have done me no good to argue against this. Traditionally it is the Old Vampire Representative who deals with such as these.

I have a good track record with Debutante Vampires, of which Michael is one.

His file is being released to me soon and I have been told that even Jane is not allowed to see it.

This probably means one of The Ruler’s Men standing over me as I read it and memorise the pertinent chunks.

It will not be easy to persuade Michael that he cannot go around drinking any human he chooses and must be selective about his prey. They are food, after all.

Caught Killer

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

We have finally caught the killer. Andy, the Human Police Representative, had worked out who was likely to be targeted and where. I had worked out what the killer would do and why.

We put our two viewpoints together and since the killer was targeting only important humans just two humans fitted who would be next.

Andy had the manpower to keep these humans under observation and wait until the killer struck, while The King’s Men waited in the background to take the killer down.

We put him in a cell at the prison to cool down as he was raving solidly and no-one could make any sense of what he was saying.

He is a Debutante Vampire called Michael, who is part way through his training.

Andy wanted me to do something called “background checks” on him. Once he had explained what they were, I explained that I had written a report which The Ruler would read and decide what to do.

He will have reports from his Men, but will want one from me, as it details how Andy and I worked together.

It was decided to let Michael reflect on his position for a while before The King’s Men removed him for questioning.

They will also be questioning his Sire, Parent and anyone else who was involved with him.

It will be amusing to watch this ripple through Old Vampire society while I am not on the receiving end of The Ruler’s Men.

Of course, it is a lot less amusing for those who have had contact with him.

I am getting calls from anxious Old Vampires who are asking my advice on this matter. I always say that it is better to contact The King’s Men yourself than the reverse.

Patterns

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The pattern of the killer is finally beginning to emerge and soon I will have some real information on when, where and who the killer strikes.

Unfortunately this is unlikely to endear me to the Human Police Representative, who I am supposed to be working with but unfortunately have not had any contact with for a week.

However, I must persevere as much as I can with this. I know The Ruler is happy with my reports, or I would have heard something from his Men.

Unfortunately Old Vampires are beginning to ask me questions as they fear humans’ interference. Most of us remember the mobs, but it will be a sunny day in our castles when I am unable to deflect questions from a few Old Vampires.

Unfortunately this time I am their Representative and this means I Have to be Seen to Do Something about all this.

So I interrogated a few likely people, which is always fun. Quite a coincidence that they happened to be enemies of those asking me questions.

None of those had any pertinent information as to the matter in hand; although some of them had interesting information of another sort.

Thankfully I do not have to w.o.r.k. while doing this investigation or it would be impossible for me to get anything of this investigation done.

A human would be stringing this investigation out. We fear The Ruler’s Men too much to do this.

All this means that I am invited to more parties than I usually am; people want to know what is going on but unfortunately rarely give me any pertinent information in return.

I doubt that this situation will improve my Status or lack of money but one never knows. An Old Vampire has to make the best of any situation they find themselves in.

Training

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

So few of these human managers seem to be any good at their jobs. Then again, I hear 80% of them have had no training.

For an Old Vampire, this would be an appalling state of affairs that would not be tolerated.

An Old Vampire Servant’s training is overseen by the butler, so that they do not let the side down; Debutante Vampires are really Old Vampires in training and will not become Old Vampires until we are sure that they have fully absorbed their training.

This is not just coaching Debutante Vampires of what to do in various situations; it is also arranging trial sessions with an ally, where we watch how the Debutante behaves and correct any mistakes.

Then we repeat a similar situation a few months later to see if they have remembered the training.

If not, we train them again and again until the training is in the blood. Training can take from as little as forty years to two centuries, although that was certainly an unusual case.

How can humans know what to do unless they have been properly trained like this?

I often see humans having a two-second run-down of what to do and then being told to get on with it.

Human managers should not be surprised when the trainee makes mistakes as a two-second run-down is not training.

Human managers should be correcting the fault kindly; it is no good shouting at the human as it will only demoralise them; especially when the human has made a decision in the absence of any managers who know the situation.

We train for all situations; when an Old Vampire, not a Debutante, makes a mistake then that is a deliberate faux pas and then the Old Vampire could be shouted at, but depending on whether or not you are allies with the person, will be avoided and snubbed.

Fighting

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

For the first time I have watched humans perform martial arts. It was most interesting seeing the humans’ economy of movement and how they defend themselves.

Any vampire, even a New Vampire, is still too fast for a human, however skilled they are.

It amuses me that humans must defend themselves against other humans and walk around afraid of being attacked.

We Old Vampires use the fence to air any grievances which have escalated as far as fighting.

I still owe Gerhardt a favour for training me to win my last fence. I have no doubt that unless he is careless enough to get himself killed he will someday collect.

For grievances which have not got as far as fighting there are always our machinations and allies to fall back on.

While being a New Vampire is cause enough for us to attack them it causes too much trouble.

If we meet while hunting both parties walk out of the area. It is the only way as neither would give way to one another.

Neither I nor Nosferatu (the New Vampire representative) relish being called out to deal with such a thing and for once we are both in accord that whoever disturbs us must pay.

He is more physical in taking payment, while I view allies and obligations to be worth more than favours.

Unfortunately these days I must take money, as I need to pay off my obligation to Adele.

All Old Vampires are schooled in boxing techniques in case we need to fight outside the fence.

It would be embarrassing in so many ways if I lost to a New Vampire; embarrassing in nearly as many other ways to another Old Vampire.

Even before New Vampires existed Werewolves had no love for us and some would try to kill us, so we had to be prepared.

Humans were never a problem unless a mob got together. One or two together we could take quite easily.

Predators

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

We look like humans to you, so you forget that we are uncaring predators who happily kill without a thought; you idolise us as being sexy and think that alleviates our danger.

While you think we are sexy it only adds to our allure and makes us more dangerous, as humans are drawn to us like moths to a flame; especially as men do not see the danger in our women and many a life has been extinguished without the knowledge we were a threat until it was gone.

You should never forget that we are the ones who are on top of the food chain.

It is very annoying, but I must admit that humans forgetting who we are make our lives easier. I would prefer to live as who I am.

We can hunt without fear of the mob and you humans are more careless around us.

Sharp bits of wood are no longer carried by humans and with the decline of Christianity there is a lack of crosses, holy water and priests who are trained in dealing with us.

Garlic has never been much in evidence in Britain, with many people today asking for it to be removed from their food, which is all to the good of vampires.

The cameras that are so prevalent on street corners nowadays do not worry us, as we have never shown up on them.

It would be perfect were it not for the Human police, who of course do not approve of hunting humans.

We try and thwart them at every turn, try and prevent them finding bodies with no blood in them, as it annoys them and they make us uncomfortable in return.

New Vampires do not see this as a problem, but we like our lives as they are : quiet and free to carry on as we wish.

There is always the worry that new laws will be passed that forbid us from the hunt.

Sick

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

I used to scorn humans who got sick. After all, they were frail things, unlike we Old Vampires who were never sick.

After a week off “sick” because I was too tired to work I now have more sympathy for humans who are sick.

This was one of those times where working in the day, when I should be asleep, had taken its toll on me and I was simply unable to get out of my coffin in the morning.

It took several nights before I was up and about, several more until I was back to my usual self.

Of course, I reported all this to The Ruler as he (or more likely, one of his Men) has to know anything to do with the post I have taken, as it is important that vampires get their blood in prison.

My human colleagues seem to be off sick for varying amounts. There is one who is never off sick and one or two who always seem to be off sick.

If all Old Vampires worked, then we would all be sick for roughly the same amount of time as our bodies work the same.

I was shocked to find out that humans would take time off sick when they were not actually sick, whereas an Old Vampire would never do that.

When I was a human there was no sick pay, so humans would work unless they were too ill to get out of bed.

Nowadays they seem to telephone in sick at the drop of a hat. It is all coughs and colds, never shaking like a leaf in bed or crippled with joint-ail.

One employee I know has had to take medical retirement. In my day that was being taken care of by family, or begging if there was no family.

As with all modern fads, they make some things better and others worse.

Hunting Humans

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

I have cursed humans I have hunted who have evaded me with cunning and the use of their wits.

They were few and far between and I respect those who can do it, but must leave them alone through fear of exposure.

If I could I would hunt them all down as I fear what will happen if they breed humans who can evade us.

I suspect the ones who are able to evade us enter their Police service, who caught me trying to obtain information on them. It was well done and I am now more careful around known Human Police. It is realising who is and who isn’t Human Police that will be the challenge I relish.

While Andy, the Human Police representative, cannot do anything to us about the ones we hunt who get away, if they come to his notice myself and the Old Vampire in question will be given a hard time. We do not relish answering questions in a vampire-proof room.

The restrictions placed on our hunting these days are galling and they have added more and more rules throughout the years. On the other hand, it gives us freedom from the mobs, so it is not too high a price to pay.

We chafe at the lack of freedom to hunt whomever we want whenever we want and answer no questions.

As to the ones who we are successful in hunting, it chafes Andy that he has to cover it up.

We try not to involve him too often and usually take those who would not be missed, but now and then one of us makes a mistake.

It is difficult to judge who the important humans are these days. We still avoid anyone dressed formally as these were important people.

Unfortunately important people these days can also be dressed as riff-raff and since there are more people, it is difficult to keep tabs on whom is whom.

The person who chooses our bosses is of Asian origin. She favours Asian prisoners and they get preferential treatment from her.

I can assure you that Old Vampires never do this. I realise that European humans only stopped thinking of non-whites as sub-human around a century ago, but to us all that matters is that the person is an Old Vampire.

Even if that person is a Servant and no matter what they have or have not done before they became a Servant, they are still an Old Vampire. We do not forget their history, but they are one of us, whatever their colour or race.

Unfortunately this person is not so stupid as to say anything out loud, but her actions speak for themselves.

She will promise the world to the prisoners and then they will turn around to Education and say “the lady promised us this” and we have no way of making good on the promise.

Any Asian prisoner making a complaint to her is heard and it is acted upon, although she takes all the credit while we do all the work. Any non-Asian prisoner’s complaint is ignored.

If any Old Vampire dared to do this they would be taken out by one of us and shown the error of their ways. If it was an Old Vampire Servant their butler would do the same.

It seems that behaviour from white people in Britain towards other races is tolerated less than behaviour towards other races from non-whites.

I have heard complaints that some non-whites only employ others of their own race and colour, whereas whites have to employ other races.

I suspect that this toleration is because of the slave trade, which they are still feeling guilty about, when what is important is what is happening now.

I can assure you that non-white Old Vampires do not show preference for those of their own colour. We would deal with them severely if they did.
