Obligation

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

I have not written much lately about my Obligation.  This is because there is not much to report.

Adele occasionally asks me for reports from the prison.  Some of these I am not supposed to have, but the mere fact that something is illegal for humans has never stopped any Obligator asking.

If I am caught I will be useless to her as an Obligatee and would lose my job.  This outcome would benefit me greatly.

Unfortunately, this is unlikely to happen.  In my first year at the prison I was searched often; now I am searched once a year if at all.  It is the usual sloppy application of rules by humans.

I have been unable to find out why she wants these reports.  Information is power and Adele is usually careless with hers, which makes me all the more certain that she is making plans for the future.

This is my first and last time as an Obligatee.  It chafes me to be at the beck and call of someone other than our Ruler.

I do not want to get used to it, as some of my Obligatees are.  I see those who are used to it get out of one Obligation only to be ensnared by another.  I will not become one of those Obligatees!

The other way to get out of my Obligation is to pay Adele off.  Unfortunately I am not amassing much wealth these days and my portfolio is decidedly slim.

I did not think I could fall from grace so fast or so hard, but I have learnt to my cost that gambling can destroy situations even sooner.

It was gambling that led to my Obligation, as Adele set me up to lose money and I had to turn to her to pay my debts.

However, these events have only come about during the last few decades.  A century is a short time for we Old Vampires.
