In British fiction all vampires have homes with basements.  In real life many homes do not have basements, mine included.

Instead, I have a coffin in the attic.  I had a nice loft conversion done with an escape hatch put in, so I can disappear if needed.

Even in the daytime a bat emerging from an attic does not cause comment, whereas a bat emerging from the front door always does.

Of course, many people came round to visit after they had heard about my loft conversion.

Some followed my lead and have put guest quarters in the attics, complete with escape hatches.

Others have kept to convention which has stopped them doing the same.

A basement does not give the same opportunities for escape as an attic and many a vampire has been caught by the mob with no escape route.

As far as humans know we vampires do not change and we stick to what we know, so for humans vampires always have to have basements, even in today’s society.

New Vampires generally live in squats.  There are not many properties that lie empty, so New Vampires have to place their coffins where and when they can.

Like us they prefer basements, but a boarded-up property offers many opportunities as to where to put your coffin and there is little light that gets through.

Many a New Vampire has been killed by a human taking the boards off a property to show someone around.

While we Old Vampires do have the patent for a total sun block, boarded up properties would never suffice.  We require total darkness to sleep in.

I am a traditionalist at heart, but I would not go back to a coffin in a basement unless I had to.
