Vampire Servants are always held to be and always have been Old Vampires, but Jane has always been uneasy about her history as a New Vampire.

Apparently for New Vampires where you came from and your “standing” is important.

Jane tried to explain “standing” to me, but I don’t understand it.  Something about who made you a vampire as well as what you have and own?

I know from Columbine, my New Vampire contact at the prison, that New Vampires pride themselves on not having anything.  When she starts speaking to me again I will have to ask her to clarify the situation.

One of the few things both New and Old Vampires agree on is that New Vampires are not Servants.  New Vampires shun the idea of anyone being in servitude to anyone else.

They seem to think that servants are little more than slaves and we keep them in durance vile.

Jane is free to leave my employment when she chooses after giving a month’s notice, which conforms to current employment laws.

I also value her greatly; I would not be able to get another Vampire Servant who would work in an establishment other than a castle.

Sometimes I go to give Jane requests and find her entertaining butlers.

Worried, I asked the first butler to see me before leaving.  While most of what goes on is Servants’ business, I have a duty of care to any servant I employ.

Fortunately the butler reassured me that he was checking that Jane did not let the side down.

He did not mind her situation, as that was employers’ business, but butlers (as a whole) want to make sure she is not embarrassing them.  That is Servants’ business.
