Normally an Old Vampire married couple guide one another through life; providing advice, support and allies.

The couple, whether man and wife, wife and wife or man and man are bonded together as long as they exist, so we make our marriages very carefully.

I am still considered married to my missing husband Jeremy.  If the Status Monitor were to move him off the Status list, without marking him as having moved country then he would be considered dead and I would then be unmarried.

However, I am in no hurry to have him moved off the Status list as I do not want to take another spouse.  I am still recovering from losing both my castle and husband.  Also, I am not a good catch.  I am the only vampire who does not have a castle and is not a Debutante Vampire, which of course is a scandal.

A marriage may only be for political reasons.  If that is so, an Old Vampire can have a husband or wife whose sexuality does not match theirs or they are not attracted to her or him.

If that is the case they are, for all intents and purposes, a married couple and it is no use to try and turn one against the other, or even to try and gain information about one from the other.

Not even if the two are drawing blood with “practicing fencing” and shouting matches are more common than peace and quiet, the married couple will stick together as it is in the interests of each one to do so.

In days gone by, it was difficult for same-sex marriages as the humans had to be deceived twice over; deceived that the couple were vampires and deceived that they were married.

These couples were much more likely to find the mob at their door than we heterosexuals, but life has always been more dangerous for people who are different.
