The Fence

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTION OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

We bowed to each other and gave a swordsman’s salute as the fence started.

Then as soon as it had started, it was over.  We clashed swords once, twice, thrice and then I had disarmed him.

The crowd roared its appreciation while I gave him the opportunity to submit.

Instead he feinted at me, intending to run me through.  My defensive manoeuvre accidently pierced his heart and he crumbled to ash.

This was unprecedented; normally an Old Vampire submits and lives to plot another day.

We all turned and looked at our Ruler, from where he was sitting he had been unable to see that I could not have averted my sword.

The Ruler looked furious; he stood up and after talking with both seconds ruled that as I had clearly given him the opportunity to submit the fault lay with him and not with me.

What The Idiot did was a clear breach of the laws we have.  If he had lived then the Ruler could have confiscated his castle and lands or meted out other punishments to him.

He clearly wanted to be dead and for me to be punished for his death, but was not a good enough swordsman to make it look accidental.

It is the first time I know of that someone has broken a law.  There will be very serious consequences for anyone associated with The Idiot, especially his second as they have trained together.

His second has seen fit to leave the country as soon as possible.  People are taking it as an admission of guilt.  I would have done so before I started working with humans; now I realise that he may simply be avoiding the Ruler’s men.

I think this time the Ruler’s arm will stretch far away and he may have to run a very long distance.
