Obligated

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTION OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

The last time I saw Adele I had a screaming row with her about following me around; being under an Obligation to her does not let her take liberties.

Of all the infernal nuisances, Adele turned up last night.  She wants me to pass her information about the vampire prisoners that the prison which I work for holds.  Of course, this is information that is not supposed to leave the establishment.

Unfortunately, this request is well within an Obligation’s remit, so I am bound to do it.  And so it begins, the drawing in of an Obligatee until they are a mere pawn in the hands of the person who holds the Obligation.

Pawns can be sacrificed to protect.  I have seen it happen and have done it myself.   One way to negate the Obligation is by paying Adele the money she paid my debts with.  It will take a long time to pay so large a sum of money back.

The other option is to wait and see if Adele slips up and offer to negate my Obligation.  Sometimes this works and sometimes the Obligator laughs in your face.  This usually happens when you are too useful and the information you provide is too good.

Being an Obligatee means that you have to maintain a tricky balance between fulfilling the terms of your Obligation and being too useful.

If I was a human or a New Vampire, this would be difficult, but striking balances is meat and drink to an Old Vampire.

We Old Vampires are masters of subtlety, nudging people here and nudging people there so that they move the way they want.

Manipulating humans is a walk in the dark.  I do it at work every day.  Now, manipulating an Old Vampire is a real challenge.
