Fun

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTION OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

When you have to work (excuse the four letter word) there is not much time to have fun.

For vampires fun is carefully selecting your prey from a multitude of possibles.  Fun is carefully stalking your prey, finding out where they go and when they’re alone.  Fun is catching the prey alone and with no-one to help.

The culmination of these acts in the drinking of the prey’s blood are merely the footnote to it all.

Of course, we have to drink blood to survive.  Hunger is a good sauce for meat and if an Old Vampire is desperate, there are always sheep in the country.  We make it look like a fox attack and the humans know no better.

I can’t abide those films that show vampires drinking the blood of rats.  An Old Vampire would certainly not stoop so low, although New Vampires may well do so.

If an Old Vampire has to drink an animal, our animal of preference is deer.  There’s no fun in drinking sheep or cows as these animals are boringly easy to hunt.  Other animals are less easy to hunt, but there are not enough of them.

Deer are more difficult to hunt than humans, as they are still hunted, whereas humans (on the whole) are not, so deer have retained their prey instincts.

Vampires are set up to live off humans and deer is a poor second choice, however rich the meat.

At the end of the day, deer are worth money and money talks.  I have heard humans say that you can’t put a value on a human.

If someone is careless or unlucky then a dead deer means that the people managing the herd will beef up security, whereas the police will investigate a dead human, but the evidence will eventually lead nowhere and that will be the end of it.
