Christmas

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTION OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

John Lennon got it correct when he wrote “so this is Christmas” for the song “War is Over”.

Most Old Vampires celebrate Christmas.  I believe that the Scottish ones don’t as the Reformation stopped Scots in general celebrating Christmas.

The Scots started celebrating Christmas again in the last fifty years or so, but the Scottish vampires haven’t re-instated it.

We only do it because everyone else was doing it.  Appearances are important to Old Vampires, as is blending in with the Humans.  And old habits are hard to shake.

New Vampires may, or may not celebrate Christmas.  The older ones who were turned in the Victorian era do.  The rest tend not to bother.

Christmas is a lot of trouble these days.  There is so much to do and to buy.  While I love the fact that Christmas is now a commercial festival instead of a Christian one, I could do without the scurrying around to get things done.

This Christmas I cannot play the lavish hostess that I used to do, offering my guests fine and rare blood.

However, I still have some parties to go to.  More than last year, as some vampires and I are worried about the rumours that The Hunters are going to be given new powers.

Our parties, while often excuses for us to indulge ourselves, can also be used to obtain information and meet contacts discreetly and unobtrusively.

This is easily done when it’s late in the morning and other people’s attentions are elsewhere.

While my first priority is to find out more about the rumours and, if they are true, to stop them happening, my second priority is to elevate my Status.

I believe Humans call it “social climbing” – a negative term, but only from the point of view of one who has not fallen.
