Work

*** DISCLAIMER – THIS BLOG IS FICTION AND THE AUTHOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR THE ACTIONS OF ANYONE WHO PERSISTS IN THINKING IT IS NOT FICTION ***

As many of you know, I have the shame of having to work for a living, when I would rather be the idle rich.

On the face of it, I work in a prison as an administrator. At the heart of it, I have other duties.

I make sure that the vampires in the prison system have a supply of blood and visit them to make sure they are behaving themselves, as the last thing we want is a fellow prisoner dead with bite marks in their throat.

I love it on the rare occasions a fellow Old Vampire is in prison. We talk and reminisce about better times when the vampire was not a prisoner and I did not have to work.

But with a New Vampire, it’s another matter. They are very reluctant to accept help from an Old Vampire.

They see us as hidebound, stuck in our ways. We are the status quo, while they are the new revolutionaries who are covertly working to bring us down by making sure every vampire is a New Vampire.

It’s very romantic and if I had been born in a different century I would be a New Vampire.
What people do not realise is that the status quo, apart from revolutions, is changed slowly and steadily, bit by bit.

It’s changed in the way people live their lives, what they do, what they make a stand for, what they are. And this is how the world turns.

A New Vampire wants change now and is reluctant to accept the help of an Old Vampire like me.
New Vampires are kept locked up until the need for blood outweighs accepting help from an Old Vampire.
And once they have accepted help, then I talk to them to make sure they keep their heads down and behave.

In a place like a prison, the status quo moulds you and when they come out, they are no longer New Vampires.
