Debutante Vampires

New Vampires did not start to exist until Bram Stoker escaped the clutches of a vampire and wrote Dracula.  The novel was based on us, but there is a lot that Bram Stoker didn’t know about us.

And that was the book that released knowledge of us into the world and started it all.  There were folk-stories of us before, but the novel was so popular everyone read it.

Beforehand, someone who had recently become a vampire would be a Debutante Vampire.

Unlike a human debutante, a Debutante Vampire could be from any of the human social classes.

from the upper classes, but in the past it has not been uncommon for a vampire to make a mistake and raise a human who is new money, but still working class.

So when someone became a vampire they left their human class behind and the person who raised him or her was responsible for educating him or her in polite society.

When that education was complete, then the debutante would have a coming out ball to introduce them to the rest of the vampires.

So people started getting ideas about vampires and when those people became vampires, more and more people were reluctant to be educated in our ways, till there came a day when debutantes ceased.

This has got worse since the nineteen-fifties.  The advent of rock and roll was the birth of the New Vampire culture as we know it.

That culture is all sex, drugs and rock and roll.  It’s a human culture, not a vampire one.

Not all New Vampires are, or were, bikers.  Some stayed aloof from the biker scene and would have been Debutantes, but that way of life is dead.  Now Old Vampires have to earn their status.
